Ask yourself why… procrastination

September 22, 2007

I read this post the other day after this person linked from my comments section on my guitar post. Some really good stuff, and this blog is dedicated to helping to have a more productive & effective life- tips on leadership, communication, progress, and procrastination.

One of the biggest take-aways for me is in asking yourself “Why do I procrastinate?” Why do I put off going to the gym, picking guitar and songwriting back up, laundry & dishes, organizing that closet, and whatever else it is for you that you end up not doing what you know you need to or even what you want to do. Check out the post below, and hop over to Benjamin’s blog for more insightful stuff…no really, get off your butt and go do it!

The Now Habit – Dealing with Procrastination
Posted on February 5, 2007 by Jaminellis.wordpress.com

I was going to read a book on procrastination, but I just kept putting it off. It would be funny, if it wasn’t true! Actually, I just finished reading a book on procrastination, which I found helpful, so it seemed a good idea to remind myself what it said.

Procrastination is a major productivity issue in modern life, just check out 43things.com where you’ll find over 14,000 people trying to stop procrastinating, all at once – a veritable hive of inactivity! It is almost constantly near the top of the rankings of things that people want to sort out in their lives. Procrastination isn’t just ‘not doing things’, it is also ‘doing the wrong things’. I think that, if we are honest, the majority of us procrastinate to some degree or other, but highly successful people generally don’t. That makes it a prime target to tackle on many people’s self-improvement journey. I am no exception. It is just a very hard thing to deal with. It is touched upon in so many books, but a good remedy seems hard to find. So far my favourite has been The Now Habit: Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-free Play by Neil Fiore, Ph.D.

I had not read one of Neil Fiore’s books before, but his book “Dealing with the Emotional Side of Cancer” had been recommended to me, so I purchased the Now Habit. That isn’t as random as it sounds, I promise you. Perhaps I was procrastinating? Based on the strength of The Now Habit, I think I will be getting the original book. The Now Habit isn’t perfect as a book or as a system, nothing is, but I have found it to be remarkably helpful. It was written out of Neil’s own struggles with procrastination and his work with his many clients. Here is a brief overview, there is no substitute for reading the book, but hopefully this will provide some encouragement, in running through the content of the chapters:

Introduction

Starting with a Maslow quote, the introduction sets out a positive philosophy for dealing with procrastination – The Now Habit. How to move from being a procrastinator, to being a producer.

1. Why we procrastinate.

The warning signs:

☑Impossibly long “to do” list, talk to yourself in “have to’s”
☑Unrealistic about time, vague about goals and values
☑Feelings of depression, low self-esteem and fear.

Our worst critic is ourselves (we judge ourselves a failure, before we have even started). Procrastination is inherently rewarding – you escape the object of your fear and do something that you ‘want’ to do, rather than ‘have to’. Sometimes the object of the procrastination even goes away, because circumstances change, or because someone else deals with it. Procrastination is a self-reinforcing, vicious circle. Procrastination can express resentment, or defend against fear of failure or fear of success. A really helpful quote:

“the drive for success involves setting a goal, making it a high priority, and then investing time and energy towards its achievement.”

I’m a Reverend now!

September 18, 2007

A Reverend guitar kind of girl anyway…

You would never know it, but I played guitar for 4-5 years then got to college and became lazy and had a little problem with overdrawing my bank account. I had a fairly nice acoustic and sold it to buy a Big Baby Taylor, which I was really into at the time. I actually was fairly decent at playing and led worship throughout high school with it. BUT like I said, I didn’t really know how to manage money, so that money I made to put towards the Taylor went right back into my account to cover my over draft fees.

So with Chad’s buying and selling and trading- I ended up getting this Reverend Roundhouse 290. Love the thinner body style electric and sunburst top kind of modeled after the 50’s-60’s Les Paul special. This should motivate me to get back in the game, and especially to aid my songwriting. Yay, I’m excited.

This just in…

September 14, 2007

I read this passage out of Exodus 14 this morning in my bible reading. The Egyptians have it out for Moses and his band, and they’re hot on their trail. They are pretty freaked out and Moses says this:

13″Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. 14The Lord himself will fight for you.”

How cool is that? Whatever you’re going thru, small or big, rest assured that the Lord will is on your side and fighting for you. Don’t give up; keep going.

You ready? Here it is…Announcement #2

September 7, 2007

I’m trying to find out if it’s really true. Will I really have more fun?

Ahhh! This is so crazy! I do something different every 3-4 months or so, but I’ve NEVER gone this drastic before…I think I’m digging it though. It’ll be an adjustment at our house. I’ll probably wake up and scare myself while I begin brushing my teeth in the morning.

Seriously…this is annoying

September 6, 2007

photo.jpgI’ve been getting ready for the new iPod Classic which I mentioned earlier. Chad’s got plenty stored up in his paypal account from selling and trading gear, woohoo. I ordered the new black iPod Classic Wednesday night so hopefully it’s here in a day or two.

But seriously…this is annoying- I’ve been going strong for TWO WHOLE FREAKING DAYS ripping my current iPod back onto my laptop using this free downloadable program. Holy crap this is annoying and wayyyy too slow. Literally, it’s been 2 whole days- I keep my Mac open all day, plugged into battery, sitting under my desk at work on top of my work PC, and every 10 minutes or so I have the option to click “Purchase Backstage to eliminate this pop-up and to enable wait-free backups”. OR, to click “Later” every 10 minutes because it only imports several songs at a time since it’s a trial version. Ugh. What a hassle. The alternative was to locate and match up all the songs on various CD’s, my Mac, and our external hard drive and import to my laptop, and THEN import into the NEW iPod. I don’t know which is worse…

Here we are at 11:10pm…50 minutes until FRIDAY…. and still at 1501 out of 1840 songs. Sheesh.

Big Announcement #1

September 6, 2007

::Warning::
Exciting times ahead. Sharp or sudden turns likely.
Road may become slippery when wet, proceed with caution.
Embrace the smallness, embrace the detours.

Ok, I know it sounds a bit cryptic but it’s really not. So this Big Announcement #1 is just to say that there will be some other cool announcements coming up, so stay tuned. The first, well technically the 2nd, will be posted Friday night- this one is going to be a fun one! =)

Go directly to jail: do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars.

Can’t hardly wait

September 5, 2007

I said in a previous post that my iPod’s busted. It’s a 3rd generation and has been fading over the years…it’s a “hand-me-down” from Chad. I give him a hard time, but really I’ve never complained that he would get the new things and the older things would get passed down to me! Ha ha. I was just glad to have the thing- after my conversion experience (I used to be anti-Apple and now I will never go back) I realized the glorious product which is the iPod was one of the THE best inventions ever. Who would ever go back to carrying heavy CD books around in their car, allowing their CD’s to get all junked up, scratched, lost?? Plus, the sound quality lately stinks- I don’t know if the amp in it is blown or if the jack is bad, but either way, any song I listen to these days has a very distorted sound- and it’s not any of the the speakers in either car.

So, in hopefully a few days, possibly Monday, my new iPod Classic will come in and it will be back in black baby. All 80g’s of it! I’ve always been a fan of the bigger model- I can see it better, easy to use interface, etc. This new one’s just beautiful. Right now I’m in the process of ripping everything off my iPod back onto my laptop. Word to the wise- research the free ripping downloads first because the one I’m using is SOOO slow and it’s taken me a day plus some to get it all off of there. But in the long run, I would’ve rather done it that way than to try to locate the songs I want on random CD’s or our external hardrive. Whatever, much to look forward to Monday!

OLD NEW

New baby!

September 5, 2007

Ha ha, gotcha there for a second. Yes, all four of you who read this thing…

dsc00108_2.jpg

I’m pretty stoked to say that Chad’s cousin Hugh Jackson and his wife Jayna are pregnant with their first child! This is also the first grandchild on the Barefoot family side out of Chad and his 4 cousins. And his Aunt Frances is one proud grandma-to-be!We’re calling the baby little Beanie until after we find out if it’s a girl or a boy…because right now the sonogram only shows a little bean-sized tike! Lots of exciting times ahead! Congrats guys!

Catching up & random thoughts

September 5, 2007

Spending time taking a break, traveling around, sleeping in, reflecting, listening to God’s voice, hanging with friends…ah, the good things in life. I’m glad I’ve been able to do it, and Chad and I have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Some random thoughts mulling over the past few weeks…

1. I love how you can get together with those few special friends that you come across in your life, how any time or distance could’ve passed and when you meet up it’s like you pick right up where you left off and no time has gone by at all… and that time turns into hours of just sitting with coffee, talking, laughing, crying and sharing hearts. That’s a sweet time.

2. It’s always a great time going to the Apple store at Crabtree Valley Mall. My 4-year-old ipod is busted and I wanted to get a new one sooo bad, but Chad and the Apple reps said waaaaiiit til Wednesday after the press conference- speculation says it could be the next gen ipod. Did you know you can “recycle” your old ipod and they’ll give you 10% off toward your next ipod? Good to know.

3. Chad has been a trading/selling fool this summer. He loves perusing The Gear Page on all things guitars and gear. He has traded and sold some stuff and saved up as well…and this weekend got a pretty stinkin’ sweet amp for a mad deal. Bye bye Dr. Z, hello Fender Super Sonic. I don’t know much about amps but it’s got a nice full, warm sound full of character, in my opinion.

4. Checking out the 11:00 service at C3 is always cool. Good to see friends and check out the progress on the new building. They also just announced their new high school pastor Scott Randlett, an LU grad like us, who seems to be a cool, solid guy who is a great communicator. He’s coming from Christ Fellowship Church from Palm Beach Gardens, FL. He spoke in the main services about seeing people thru the eyes of Jesus. Good stuff, check the podcast here.

5. Spending hours in line sweating to death at Charleston’s American Idol auditions: not as fun as you might think. Cool to tour around and hang out with friends though. No, I didn’t make the first round, but oh well, it IS a tv show… On the way back Myrtle Beach Hilton was pretty nice, thanks to my discount. And oh, in Myrtle Beach, Margaritaville is one of THE funnest restaurants to go to if you like giant Hurricanes spinning in the middle of the ceiling, giant blenders on the ground, boats for tables, eating a Cheeseburger in Paradise, and of course…Jimmy Buffet music and Jimmy Buffet everything.

6. Tree63 is going to ROCK at the See You At The Pole rally C3 is kicking off Sept. 23rd at 5pm. We’re pretty excited about hittin’ that up.

7. Back to “seeing with the eyes of Jesus”…he always provides. For your needs, a clear vision, a fresh passion, comfort and hope for the messy times you don’t know what to expect or which way to head. He gives sight to those who want to see clearly, and when we go after him He surely reveals himself…

Jeremiah 29:12-14 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. [a] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
